What Are Public School Foundations?
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, reduced funding necessitated program cutbacks
in California's public schools. In response, community members came together to form local
nonprofit foundations that sought to raise funds in order to reinstate programs and support school
improvement.
Orange County local educational foundations provide valuable support for:
the arts, science, and literacy
invest in equipment and technology
fund after-school, summer enrichment and tutoring programs
promote teacher innovations through classroom grants
serve as trusted information conduits between schools and their communities.
Foundation funding sources include events such as:
dinners
auctions
golf tournaments
home tours
10k races
corporate underwriting and donations
annual campaigns

Why Form a Countywide Coalition?
Up to now local educational foundations have operated as separate entities.
We believe that we can generate substantially greater support for Orange County schools and
students by working together in countywide fundraising and in stimulating the development of
new and existing foundations. To that end, the Coalition seeks to encourage support and
publicize effective partnerships between corporations, communities, and schools.

What is the Coalition's History?
Representatives from Orange County local educational foundations have
met informally since 1992. On August 30, 2000 the Coalition was formally organized by adopting
bylaws, electing a board of directors and officers, and completing applications for recognition
as a 501(c)(3) Fed.ID# 33-0927025 corporation. Thirteen Orange County local educational
foundations worked together to launch the Coalition and have leaders currently serving on
its board of directors. Seed money was provided by the Orange County Community Foundation.

How Many Children Does the Coalition Benefit?
There are 28 public school districts in Orange County, serving
approximately 475,000 students. Currently, 13 districts have local educational foundations that
are participants in the Coalition, benefiting about 250,000 students. Other local educational
foundations have recently been contacted and are hoping to join us. The remaining
districts do not have local educational foundations.
